![]() ![]() By using all three in conjunction, you can control most keyboard functions without ever having to dive into the SteelSeries Engine software on a computer. There, you'll find a small OLED screen, a button to help navigate it, and a volume dial. Where things get interesting, however, is in the upper-right corner. I don't like it as much as the cushy wrist rests you get with Razer and HyperX gear, but it does look extremely sleek, and it's miles better than not having a wrist rest at all. You also get a magnetic wrist rest not plush, but instead a hard, supportive surface with a black-matte finish. Expect to see more like it before too long. If you want to experience what the future of gaming keyboards might look like - and can accept that you're going to be paying an early adopter tax - the Apex Pro is a creative, comfortable and forward-thinking keyboard. These drawbacks keep the Apex Pro from being an exceptional product, but not from being a good one. SteelSeries apex pro at Dell for $199.99 (opens in new tab). There's absolutely no wasted space at either end of the gadget, and I admire the keyboard's minimalism. You get a discrete volume wheel, but the rest of the media controls are restricted to a single button. You get a very cool OLED mini-display screen, but any useful information it conveys requires you to look away from the screen. You have fine control over actuation, but the switches themselves feel too soft and spongy. But when you get past that, a lot about the Apex Pro feels pretty average, especially considering the extravagant asking price. Features that are available in the paid Home edition also appear in the Free edition, but when you select them you get a notification saying the feature is not available in the Free edition. You can also split the backup files to a specific size if needed. Under advanced options, you can change the level of compression being used but this is probably best left to the default value. There are some advanced options when setting up a backup job, although they are a bit sparse due to this being a free version of the tool. The backup speeds are very competitive, although it does have the limitation that you can’t exclude personal files and folders you have backed up elsewhere. As usual, the destination can be on the local disk (typically a poor choice), removable media or a network attached storage device. Similar to other tools, in order to make a backup you select the source partition(s) or disk you want to backup and then select a destination. Different tasks are accessed from the left hand side, and there are tabs in the main area on the right for setting up backups, managing different backup configurations and job scheduling. The main window is straightforward and simple to understand. ![]() Also, unlike many other free tools (and some paid ones), it has advanced backup plan management, allowing you to specify how frequently differential vs full backups are run, when to discard old backups and a disk space threshold to delete old backups. One strong point of Macrium Reflect is that it automatically sets up the Windows PE environment during installation to make creating restore media as seamless as possible. There is also a paid version of Macrium Reflect with all the typical advanced disk imaging features, although it is a bit more expensive than other popular backup tools. However, it is missing several important features available in premium tools (presumably because it’s a free tool). The user interface is intuitive, and is quite snappy and responsive unlike some tools which can be a bit clunky in places. ![]() Macrium Reflect Free is one of the more polished free disk imaging tool currently on the market. ![]() That's why the granular settings for the excellent x264 & x265 encoders are important - a few converters use presets with speed a top priority, to the extent that quality is sacrificed. ![]() Unless there's a bug in whatever app, these ffmpeg-based converters should all give you pretty much the same quality when using the same encoder settings. In a short test encode to AVC it utilized all 16 cores of the CPU at near 100%, which is good, though clock speeds never reached the max. It seems to have rudimentary Nvidia CUDA support, but nothing I could see regarding Intel Quick Sync or AMD. It does allow granular settings for the x264 & x265 encoders included in ffmpeg, the default being SuperFast - slower settings equal more quality. IDealshare VideoGo is more-or-less you standard ffmpeg-based video converter. ![]() Share your screen to make travel plans with friends or present designs to your team.
